of Martha C. HAMMOLD McQUILLIAMS WHITLEY, October 1, 1944, to his granddaughter, Mattie Lindsey Morrison)
"... the HAMMOND family also came from Ireland at an early date
and settled in Alabama. My wife's father, James H. HAMMOND came to Tennessee a young man and married Miss Mary Ann GARY."
"... They lived in Tennessee until they had four children-E.B., Martha C., Nancy Elizabeth
"Bettie", and William Jordan HAMMOND. They then moved to Alabama where they had two more children, twins, Ambrust McCord and
James Mason. They moved to Texas, near Waco, where his wife died ..."
"... He [James] then moved to Arkansas and lived on Arbuckle Island below Ft. Smith, Arkansas.
Then he moved to Conway county, Arkansas, six miles west of the town of Morrilton. Before leaving Arbuckle Island he
married a widow, Fannie JOHNSON, by who he had two children. While living in Conway county his second wife died."
"... from there he [James] moved to Tennessee, but did not unload his wagon and came back
to Argenta, Arkansas and made one crop and came back to Conway county, where he lived a few years and married a widow by the
name of Martha Jane [HARRIS] BRENTS. They had two daughters, Rosa who is living in Center Ridge, Arkansas and Maggie who lives
at Morrilton. He then moved to Martinville, Faulkner county Arkansas, where he died March the 10th 1884 ... "
